The world has tragedies every day; events caused by nature or human behavior.
Tragedy in God's Word
The concept of tragedy in God's word can be understood through both the presence of tragic events and the overarching narrative of redemption and hope. While the bible acknowledges suffering and loss, it also emphasizes God's presence in tragedy. His ability to bring good from evil and his ultimate triumph over suffering.
"He may bring us sorrow, but his love for us is sure and strong. He takes no pleasure in causing us grief or pain." Lamentations 3:32-33
God's ultimate plan is for good, and he can use tragic events to bring about his purposes. The bible encourages believers to respond to tragedy with faith, seeking comfort in God's promises and relying on his strength. Sharing the hope of the gospel with those who are hurting is another way to respond to tragedy. Jesus says, "Listen, life is going to be hard, but I am going to be with you. I'm going to walk with you, and my presence is going to be with you in the midst of struggle and trial."
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Mathew 5:4.
Trusting God Through Our Questions
While we know that God is with us in times of tragedy, there are questions that most of us have in times of tragedy. The questions are: Why would God allow this tragedy? Surely this is not God's will! When tragedy does happen, we need to trust in the Lord. Believe in God, literally trusting that he can bear the weight of what we're experiencing. In order to trust God, we need to have Faith to commit ourselves into his hands.
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze." Isaiah 43:2
