When God Interrupted My Bible Study
Since mid-March 2025, my Bible study group and I have been cruising along studying God's word at River Hills Health and Rehabilitation. I've been surprised at how easily the lessons have come together and how receptive the participants are. We started with an overview of Romans, spent a couple of weeks discussing what it means to be "Doers of the Word" as described by James, and then moved on to the Parable of the Talents.
Our group preferred the topical approach over dedicating weeks to one book before moving on. However, I knew my approach was more like a Chinese buffet—sampling here and there. Good, but I wanted to give them more topical substance.
So I prayerfully settled on a topical discussion of the nine Fruits of the Spirit that Paul identifies in Galatians 5:22-23. We would spend a week on each of these godly qualities. There you have it—Bob's your uncle! It was a brilliant plan that "I" devised to take us away from the buffet and into fine dining.
When God Says "My Airplane"
We began with "Love" as our first fruit. That week went well. The following week we covered "Joy"—also good interaction. Next, we focused on "Kindness," which included practical activities for the residents. We were on a roll!
The following week, I had prepared to discuss "Faithfulness." All my notes were complete. The handouts were made and double-checked. It was perfect. I slept soundly and awoke for my pre-Bible study review.
And that's when the Holy Spirit said, "You are missing something... here's what you all need to know."
I was shocked! My class was to start in three hours and now God has the nerve to step in and mess up MY lesson! :-) Actually, I took it better than that, but it was a surprise.
It was like a flight instructor with a student pilot learning aerobatics when the IP says, "My airplane." The student trusts the IP and says, "Your airplane." There was no discussion until after control was relinquished. Then the instruction began.
As the old saying goes, "This ain't my first rodeo" with the Holy Spirit. When I get focused on something I teach—like God's word—I give my best in preparation. It is nearly unheard of for me to prepare and then God steps in and says, "My Presentation!" There's no doubt in my mind it was a Divine Intervention for a Divine Appointment.
The Lesson God Prepared
Here's what I learned from the One True Teacher:
God said, "You are discussing the fruit of the Spirit which are supernatural gifts from Me. But before you can appreciate these gifts, you need to appreciate My greatest gift."
I arrived and found my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ ready for our lesson. I showed them my prepared lesson on "Faithfulness" along with the handouts I planned to give them. I proceeded to tell them about the message I had received from the Holy Spirit. They graciously acknowledged that I was prepared, but now unprepared for our lesson. We would let go of the reins and see where God wanted us to go.
I asked them to think of the greatest gift they had ever received—perhaps as a child or as an adult. One mentioned a doll, another money, and still another said, "Every gift was the greatest because it was given with love." These were each genuinely great gifts, but accepting each gift as the greatest because of love gets closest to God's greatest gift.
The Fruitcake Revelation

Then I asked them how many had ever received a fruitcake as a gift. Each of us raised our hands. Many rolled their eyes, and I reinforced that millions of fruitcakes are sold annually in the United States—1.5 to 2.0 million through Collins Street Bakery alone.
I said that unless you lived during the Great Depression or had fallen on very hard times, the fruitcake may not have been such a great gift. In fact, people jokingly say that the fruitcake is the most re-gifted gift of them all!
Although the fruitcake was likely given in love, we have become spoiled. We no longer appreciate the gift as an expression of love—it has become ho-hum. We are ungrateful and forget what that fruitcake really means.
This fruitcake image came to me while sitting at the breakfast table reviewing my notes. It seemed odd and out of place, but then the "thought-stopping" intervention came from the Holy Spirit. But I didn't have time to prepare notes before leaving home. I simply showed up for class, and God did the lesson through me.
I then asked them to think of the greatest gift they could ever receive from God. Responses were consistent that "eternal life" would be God's greatest gift. We know... ho-hum... what John 3:16 says about Jesus and eternal life, but we needed to revisit John 3:1-16.
Sitting with Nicodemus and Jesus
I began reading aloud the words that we had each read so many times, but this time I could see and experience unfold before me... what Nicodemus must have thought and felt when he first encountered Jesus and they discussed being born again.
What hit me differently was I felt as if I was sitting with Nicodemus and Jesus. I was present for this special meeting in which a teacher of Jewish teachers was about to be schooled! To witness an expert in the Law and an acknowledged Jewish leader be humbled by the obvious "Master" was stunning. But as I watched the incredulous look on Nicodemus' face, I recognized it was MY incredulous look.
Jesus was teaching Nicodemus, me, this Bible study class—each one of us in the same way. Alfred Adler, founder of Individual Psychology, would do therapy sessions with a client in front of an audience. While the client on stage was his patient, Adler said that the identified client was actually in the audience. He called it "Spectator Therapy."
I wonder if Jesus, through The Word, demonstrates His form of spectator therapy? Jesus was working with Nicodemus in person, but I was there in the audience as one of the countless identified ambassadors who needed to really understand what this chapter is all about.
It was wild, crazy, outrageous to think of a person being born again. But there it was—the greatest gift we could ever get from God: Jesus Christ. Through Him we are born again into new life here on earth and eternal life in heaven.
Like my experience in the desert, the colors of the flowers were alive, fluorescent. They were flowers but they weren't ordinary flowers. Similarly, this was a powerful waking dream in which I was participating in a scene that I had previously only read about. It was multidimensional. It was real, not imaginary.
The Hidden Meaning of John 3:16
Then, once God opened our eyes to the specialness of His gift, we weren't receiving a fruitcake—a madman—as our Lord and Savior, but a fruitcake lovingly created and baked just for us. It was being handed to us individually and collectively with the love of a Father, a Brother, a King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.
All we had to do was accept it with gratitude for the price that was paid to give this fruitcake as a free gift.
Here's the hidden meaning that most people miss: John 3:16 isn't just information about God's love—it's a personal invitation wrapped in the most precious gift imaginable. We've turned it into a spiritual cliché, a bumper sticker slogan, when it's actually God's intimate love letter written in His Son's blood.
Think about it this way: Imagine that it's your mother who lovingly bakes those fruitcakes. Imagine how much it would hurt you to see others "re-gift" it as something worthless or certainly worth less.
Now consider what God gave, what Jesus gave to the world, and how sad it is for people to turn away from the greatest gift of all time. That perspective helps us appreciate God's gift.
Now we were prepared to accept this greatest gift with a new heart of gratitude. No longer will we roll our eyes when we see John 3:16 on a stranger's t-shirt as they casually pass by on a local sidewalk. No longer will we read this short verse and pass by without reflecting on what it REALLY means.
We will never again think of re-gifting John 3:16 as a way to rid ourselves of this unwanted gift, but re-gift it because God loves us and calls us to love our neighbor as He loves them. Yes, this includes the one who wears the Jesus Freak t-shirt and the ones who don't!
Understanding John 3:16's True Meaning
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16
The hidden meaning becomes clear when we understand this isn't a theological statement to memorize—it's a divine love story we're invited to enter. When we truly grasp this verse, we realize:
"For God so loved" - This isn't casual affection. This is agape love—unconditional, sacrificial, perfect love from the Creator of the universe.
"the world" - Not just the religious people, not just the good people, but everyone. The broken, the lost, the rat-bugs rusting in desert places.
"that He gave His one and only Son" - The ultimate sacrifice. God didn't send a representative or delegate. He gave His most precious possession.
"that whoever believes in Him" - No prerequisites, no membership requirements, no performance standards. Whoever.
"shall not perish but have eternal life" - This is the gift—rescue from spiritual death and the promise of forever with God.
Remember, this isn't just information to process. It's an invitation to a relationship.
How to Read John 3:16 Fresh
For someone who's heard John 3:16 a thousand times, here's my advice: Pray for the Holy Spirit to take you on a journey across time and space. Sit with Nicodemus and Jesus, and become a living spectator in God's Divine adventure.
I believe God uses these revelations as a "preview of coming attractions." He enables our spiritual Reticular Activating System to "see" His reality for us. Once we see His word as He wants us to see and experience it—as in a true relationship—then we're more likely to notice it again when we read another book, chapter, or verse.
Perhaps this is how the Bible becomes a "Living" document and not a static textbook. I believe God wants us to see ourselves in every biblical interaction. He wrote The Word for each of us.
When God Says "My Airplane" in Your Life
How can you distinguish between God's gentle course corrections versus your own doubts or distractions? This may sound odd, but someone once asked if he had bleeding hemorrhoids or not. If you've ever had them, there's no question! If you have questions, it's likely your own cognitive gymnastics. If God wants your attention, there will be NO doubt.
What should you do when you feel God saying "My airplane" in your own life or ministry? I've had a flight instructor say to me, "My airplane." It was before making a mistake that could have been fatal. He didn't say that to boost his ego or assert his power. He did it because he cared about my safety.
I could have said, "Nope! This is my aircraft and if I want to kill myself, and you with me, I'm in command!" No one in their right mind would do that at 5,000 feet in an aircraft spinning toward the ground.
But how many of us love that old Frank Sinatra song, "I Did It My Way"? "I don't need no stinking Jesus," they say. "I'm the captain of my own ship, master of my own destiny." God must smile and say, "Is that your final answer?" I hope not.
The Divine Course Correction
At the end of our lesson—the one that God prepared, presented, and presided over—He asked us to recommit our lives to Him. Every one of us did, and the narrow way was once again paved for us to resume our study of the supernatural gifts of God.
This experience was one of the most beautiful examples of how God lovingly gives us course corrections. It's not that we were using the wrong compass; we were morally aligned with His true North. It didn't even seem as if we were so far off course, failing to read our compass heading en route to our destination.
It was more like a guide saying, "Hey, did you miss that important landmark a mile back? I think you did. Your adventure will be so much more meaningful if we go back and take a look more carefully." That was the spirit in which the Holy Spirit divinely intervened in our Bible study adventure.
Your Greatest Gift Awaits
The next time you encounter John 3:16—on a bumper sticker, a billboard, or in your morning devotions—remember that you're not looking at a spiritual fruitcake to be casually dismissed or thoughtlessly re-gifted. You're looking at God's personal love letter to you, written in the blood of His Son.
This is the greatest gift you've already received, whether you've fully unwrapped it or not. It's been lovingly prepared by your Heavenly Father, hand-delivered by Jesus Christ, and personally presented to you by the Holy Spirit.
The question isn't whether the gift is good enough. The question is: Will you receive it with the gratitude and wonder it deserves?
Just as a friendly reminder...
