What if your bucket list ideas are missing the most important adventure of all? Here's some wedding day wisdom that reveals why eternal priorities beat any midlife thrill – even bungee jumping.
Christian Bucket List Ideas That Really Matter
Do you have a bucket list? You know, that collection of must-do adventures before you "kick the bucket"? Most folks start one courtesy of a midlife crisis - when the hourglass has less sand in the top than what's rapidly draining into the bottom. Better buy that Corvette, take a cruise, skydive, or bungee jump! Just don't trade your spouse for a twenty-year-old assistant - that could ensure your hourglass empties before the gas gauge in your new sports car!
However, I recently witnessed the bucket list come to life beautifully at my youngest grandson, Michael, and his beautiful bride, Caitlynn's, wedding reception. There, among the picture album and guest book, sat a simple card with a profound request:
Leave a Note or Idea, A Plan, But More Importantly an Adventure. With Love: _____
What a fantastic concept! Soliciting bucket list ideas from people who love you and have wisdom to share.
After prayer and contemplation, here's what I offer as my ultimate bucket list ideas:
A Note: If your bucket list includes life's most essential priorities before death, then ensuring eternal life after death must be on the list. That way, when one spouse goes before the other, there are no "goodbyes" - only "I'll see you later in heaven!"
An Idea: Out of all your practical wedding gifts, there's one gift greater than them all - the gift of eternal life that God promises in John 3:16. You might think, "John 3:16 again? Isn't that like getting fruitcake?" Not when you understand what it really means. It takes faith - the same faith you have in each other to love, honor, and cherish until death do you part.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16
A Plan: Once you understand you've received God's greatest gift in Jesus Christ, you can access His supernatural gifts - the Fruit of the Spirit. If you evaluate your thoughts, feelings, and actions against these nine qualities, imagine how your life together will flourish! How many needless quarrels can be avoided? How many more opportunities will you find to lift each other up?
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." - Galatians 5:22-23
An Adventure: If your bucket list includes just two handwritten notes - "We believe John 3:16" and "We commit to living Galatians 5:22-23" - your life individually and as "one" will be the greatest adventure of all.
"...if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you." Matthew 17:20
Sometimes the most meaningful bucket list ideas aren't about exotic destinations or adrenaline rushes. It's about ensuring your deepest relationships - with each other and with God - are secure for eternity. God has a way of showing off when it comes to His children who choose love over luxury, eternal perspective over temporal pleasures.
I encourage you to reconsider your own bucket list today. What truly matters when the sand runs low?
